Best time to visit Mexico

To know when to travel to Mexico, the first thing you need to bear in mind is that the country only has two main seasons. Due to its geographical situation, Mexico has a dry season and a wet season, with the rains concentrated mostly during the summer.

Best time to travel to Mexico

The best time to visit Mexico is the period covering the months of November to April, during the dry season. During the rainy season, between June and October, the rains are torrential, but not long-lasting, which means you can still enjoy most of the activities on offer in Mexico.

The month of May is worth mentioning separately, it is a dry month but very hot, so it is best to avoid it if you're not a fan of the heat . On the other hand, there are also differences in weather depending on the altitude. Proof of this is that the winter is very cold in the mountains and the sun is hidden behind clouds most of the time. In the south of the country, however, it is warm throughout the year.

In general, it is preferable to choose the months of the dry season to travel, which are from November to April. However, if you travel between May and October, although there will be some rain, your trip won’t be hugely affected.

Knowing this, let’s look at the best time to travel to Mexico depending on the region you want to visit.

When to travel to the north of Mexico

Northern Mexico enjoys generally fine, stable weather throughout the year. Despite this, between July and September, the summer rains make an appearance, so it may not be the best time to visit the area.

If you travel in February or March, you should bear in mind that the temperature can fall below 0ºC in places, so avoid these months to if you plan on exploring Monterrey or Chihuahua. Therefore, the best thing is to travel to the north isduring the dry season, avoiding February and March.

When to travel to central Mexico

The central region of Mexico enjoys its best weather in March and April, during the dry season. October and November are also suitable for discovering the wonders of the central part of this renowned country.

If you travel during these months, you will be able to avoid the rain as well as the overwhelming heat of the dry season. This season is the best time to visit the Mayan ruins and the most emblematic cities of the region, such as Teotihuacán.

When to travel to Baja California

If you are planning to visit Tijuana and the small villages of the surrounding mountains, with all of the natural beauty this brings with it, try to avoid the height of summer. The thermometer can reach up to 50ºC, so organising your trip between June and August may not be the best for those who prefer cooler climates.

The best time to visit Baja California is from November to April. The temperatures are more bearable and this will allow you to enjoy the scenery more comfortably.

When to travel to Bajío

The Bajío plateau, with its mountains and deserts, is an ideal region to visit during the dry season. Within this season, May is the most suitable month to explore its colonial cities and all of the beauty of Guanajuato.

On the other hand, avoid the rainy season if possible, which is between June and October. Being a region with an average altitude of 1,500 metres, the temperature can drop significantly and it can rain frequently.

When to travel to the Pacific Coast of Mexico

If you want to bathe on the beautiful beaches, go whale watching and enjoy the incredible sunsets of the Pacific coast, you'll be pleased to know this region boasts beautiful weather throughout the year!

During the winter months, from November to February, the climate is mild, so these months are perfect for a warm winter escape. The summers, although they are a lot hotter, also bring moderate rainfall between June and September. Nevertheless, the rains are short-lived and should not affect your ability to enjoy the delights of the Pacific coast.

When to travel to Yucatán

To travel to the famous Yucatan peninsula and discover everything that this part of Mexico can offer you, try to travel between December and February. The climate during this season is much more pleasant than in summer and you will also avoid the summer rains. March and April are also good for visiting this region, although the temperatures start to increase considerably at this time of the year.

With an average temperature of between 25ºC and 30ºC practically all year round, Yucatan enjoys year-round sunshine. It is located inside the hurricane area so it may be worthwhile remembering this if you plan to travel between May and December.
